2017 MEMORIAL SERVICE
Charleston, SC
March 10, 2017

  • If they are remembered,
  • they are not forgotten.
  • They simply change duty stations
  • and are amongst our best.

The Watch

  • For twenty years
  • This sailor has stood the watch
  • While some of us were in our bunks at night
  • This sailor stood the watch
  • While some of us were in school learning our trade
  • This shipmate stood the watch
  • Yes.. even before some of us were born into this world
  • This shipmate stood the watch
  • In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history
  • This shipmate stood the watch
  • Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see his family standing there
  • Needing his guidance and help
  • Needing that hand to hold during those hard times
  • But he still stood the watch
  • He stood the watch for twenty years
  • He stood the watch so that we, our families and
  • Our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety,
  • Each and every night
  • Knowing that a sailor stood the watch
  • Today we are here to say
  • ‘Shipmate… the watch stands relieved
  • Relieved by those You have trained ,Guided, and Led
  • Shipmate you stand relieved.. we have the watch…”

Until We Meet Again

  • Sail with the fast tide, dear shipmate of mine
  • To another home, far distant, so sweet and divine
  • As we salute your many proud deeds in life
  • Of love, kindness and duty to our nation in strife
  • Set your compass true towards the sinking sun
  • Sleep well on your journey until the night is done
  • Awake to see a new and glorious peaceful place
  • Where time is endless and gone is mortals’ frantic pace
  • Now as your ship fades beyond our view
  • Already we grieve at the loss of a man such as you
  • Yet ever so close you will always be
  • A giant among men and a dear brother to me

– ©2016 George Mansford, by permission.

Retired Australian Army Brigadier, soldier, author, and poet George Mansford exchanged emails with one of our crew. After seeing messages about the loss of a shipmate, he offered his poem “Until We Meet Again” for use in our memorial program. He had written the poem at the passing of his older brother, a former RAN destroyer sailor. We are honored to include his poem as a part of our memorial service.

Taps

  • Day is done, gone the sun,
  • From the lake, from the hills,
  • From the sky.
  • All is well, safely rest,
  • God is nigh.
  • Fading light, dims the sight,
  • And a star gems the sky,
  • Gleaming bright.
  • From afar, drawing nigh,
  • Falls the night.
  • Thanks and praise, for our days,
  • ‘Neath the sun, ‘neath the stars,
  • ‘Neath the sky,
  • As we go, this we know,
  • God is nigh.
