About the “site is not secure” message

You may have noticed the in the URL bar of our site:

And you may have even noticed the “Not Secure” message if you have recently logged in:

Web browsers are now starting to warn visitors to all web sites that do not have a trusted organization’s security certificate by putting the in the URL box and sometimes the words “Not Secure.”

What is a security certificate? Basically, a security certificate is software that is installed on the web server to create a secure connection which does two things:

  1. It encrypts the data that is being transmitted, to prevent hackers from stealing or tampering with private information such as credit card numbers, passwords, names, addresses and emails
  2. It authenticates the identity of the website as trustworthy, which assures visitors that they’re on a legitimate site that has not been tampered with by hackers or identity thieves.

Our site does not currently have a security certificate. We do collect personal information such as your email address and phone number on our forms, but we do not collect credit card or other financial information. We strive to protect your personal information, but there are ways that hackers can intercept your data as long as we don’t have it encrypted with a security certificate.

We recommend that you never use a password in two different places. A password to one site should never be used to log into another site. By re-using passwords, you could be giving hackers access to sites that collect financial and other sensitive information.

Our current (March 2017) web hosting company, Lunarpages, charges two fees in order to provide a web site security certificate:

  1. The site must have a dedicated IP, for which they currently charge $59.40 per year;
  2. The security certificate, including installation, costs currently $109 per year;

The Schedule of Events for Charleston, March 2017

Day 1, Wednesday, Mar. 8

Arrive, check in, (Check-In time is 3 PM) get reacquainted, and swap sea stories.

A welcome buffet will be served from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. You are welcome to sign up for this event if your arrival time allows. The buffet will feature Low Country Barbecue fare, including:

BBQ Chicken, Ribs and Pork Southern Style Red Beans and Rice
Corn on the Cob Country Biscuits and Corn Muffins
Braised Collard Greens Red Velvet Cake, Carrot Cake
Molasses Baked Beans Fresh Fruit Cobbler

Day 2, Thursday, Mar. 9

Charleston City Market Tour and Shopping – A brief bus windshield tour of the Charleston Historic District, followed by time to browse the unique shops, boutiques, restaurants, and pubs of the Charleston City Market Area. Lunch will be on your own. – At your option, and on your own, take a private horse-drawn carriage tour of Charleston’s Historic District from any one of several carriage operators located at the Charleston Market area. The prices for the carriage rides were $25.00. Tours are about one hour long, and may be one of several different routes, depending on when you board the carriage. Mobility Note: There is a ramp available at Palmetto Carriage to get a wheelchair to the level of the carriage, but you will need to transfer to the carriage seat. There is wheelchair storage available at Palmetto’s barn.

Dinner Cruise – You will cruise Charleston’s Historic Harbor, the Ashley and Cooper rivers, past Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter. You will also see the huge State Port Terminals, and cruise within the former US Naval Base. Live music will be on board for entertainment and dancing. Relax as you enjoy a plated dinner of:

Dual Entrée of Beef Tenderloin and Fresh Catch, Stuffed Chicken, or Shrimp & Grits (Menu may vary)
Chef’s Selection of Potatoes, Rice or Pasta
Fresh Vegetable Medley, with Rolls and Butter
Chef’s Choice of Dessert
Coffee and Tea

Day 3, Friday, Mar. 10

Patriot’s Point Naval Museum – See the world’s largest Naval and Maritime museum. Visit the destroyer “Laffey”, which is very similar to the Lloyd Thomas. You can learn about the Laffey’s WWII action here. Another WWII hero is berthed here, the aircraft carrier “Yorktown”, where we will have lunch in the chief’s mess. The Yorktown has handicapped accessible elevators to the hangar deck and the flight deck. The submarine “Clamagore” is also available for the adventurous.

Memorial Service at Summerall Chapel at the Citadel – We will salute our departed shipmates in this beautiful chapel on the grounds of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. Afterward, we will watch the Friday parade of the students at the Citadel parade grounds across from the Chapel.

Day 4, Saturday, Mar. 11

Charleston Tea Plantation – Enjoy a guided tour of the plantation owned by Mr. William Barclay Hall, who partners with Bigelow Tea to operate the only working tea plantation in the United States. You will see the Factory, where you will learn all about how tea is harvested, processed and packaged. You will then tour the gardens on board a trolley, so you can see first-hand how tea is grown. There is a box lunch included with the tour.

We will hold our annual business meeting upon return to the hotel after the day’s tour.

Banquet in the Aileron Ball Room at the Doubletree Hotel in the evening. Menu choices are:

Seared Free Range Chicken Supreme, with Herb Gnocchi and Wild Mushroom Ragout
Grilled Atlantic Salmon, Toasted Pearls, Citrus and Ribbon Vegetables in a Mediterranean Sauce
Herb Roasted Prime Rib, with Horseradish Whipped Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables and Beef Au Jus

Dessert will be a choice of Peach Cobbler, or Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce..

Day 5, Sunday, Mar. 12

Depart. Hotel check out time is 12:00 PM

USS Lloyd Thomas Charleston Reunion has been Rescheduled

The USS Lloyd Thomas Charleston Reunion has been rescheduled to March 8-12, 2017.  The hotel will remain the Doubletree North Charleston Airport, and you may make your reservations now.  Our tour schedule will be the same as planned for the October reunion, and as soon as we confirm menu choices with the hotel, we will get out a sign up sheet.

The refund checks are going out this week.

Costs of Cancelled Tours Will Be Refunded

We have received word that the Charleston tour company will be returning all of our deposit for the 2016 reunion, and when those funds are in the bank, we will begin refunding 100% of what you paid for the reunion events.  We will send the check to the address shown on your events sign-up sheet.  If you need it mailed to a different address, please contact Scott at lloydthomas@atlanticbb.net .

Also, if you are trying to recover airline or other travel expenses and need a letter stating the reunion was cancelled, please let us know.

We are now trying to reschedule the Charleston reunion in the Spring of 2017.

There are no dues to belong to our organization. If you sailed aboard the USS Lloyd Thomas DD/DDE 764, you have already paid your dues and are already a member of our family.

Administrative expenses are handled by donations from shipmates. The Association uses these donations to take care of postage for the reunion mailings, maintaining this website, and other expenses. The reunions are paid for by the reunion attendees, with any excess going to the treasury as donations. We do not hire a professional reunion coordinator; all of this work is done by shipmate volunteers.

We just need your details so that we can keep each other up to date. As we plan each reunion, we will email related information to you, and would hope that you would respond so that we can make each reunion memorable.
