The 2019 USS Lloyd Thomas Reunion will be held in San Antonio, Texas from Monday, February 25th through Wednesday, February 27th. Ron Hruby from Austin (1958-62) volunteered to be our local host this year. Although Ron and his wife will be unable to attend the reunion due to a prior commitment during the dates our hotel was available, we are grateful for the tours and events he proposed for us.
Ron definitely wanted us to experience the Riverwalk Area, so we picked a hotel that is right on the Riverwalk itself. Initially part of a flood control project envisioned by San Antonio native and architect Robert Hugman the area has developed into a premier destination attraction.
If you have not attended a reunion before, and would like to check us out, we would love to see you. There are no registration fees, and all of the tours and events are optional. You can attend as many events as you wish, or you can just drop by and visit us at our hospitality room each evening, just to say hello.
The hospitality room is our base of operations at the hotel, and it will be open from when we return from the days tours until the last group decides it is bedtime (This comes earlier each year! ). Our reunion is family friendly, so all relatives and friends are welcome.
The reunion hotel will be the Holiday Inn – Riverwalk, at 217 N. St Mary’s Street, San Antonio, Texas, 78205. When you make hotel reservations by phone, please be sure to mention that you are with the USS Lloyd Thomas Reunion, or Group Code LLO, so you will get our rate, or you can book a room online.
The hotel will honor our rate of $119 per night ($138.93 with taxes) for three days before and after the reunion. If you are arriving before Feb 24th, or staying after Feb 28th, the online reservation system will not accept those dates at our negotiated rate, so you will have to make reservations directly through the hotel at (210) 224-2500.
We encourage you to make your hotel reservations as soon as possible! The Riverwalk area is a popular destination. We have a block of 40 rooms reserved, but the more desirable rooms and any special requests will be filled first.
We would like to have your sign up sheet returned to us by January 14th. We can always handle a late sign-up or two, but the earlier you can submit the sheet, the better it is for all. You can always cancel if your schedule does not work out.
There is a space on our sign-up sheet to indicate if you are interested in sharing a room with a fellow shipmate. If you mark the box, we will put you in touch with others willing to share the cost of a room.
The hotel will furnish a discounted cooked breakfast for $10 each (normally $22) and complimentary Wi-Fi and Business Center services.
Parking is at a premium in the Riverwalk area. The hotel furnishes valet parking at $32 per day, or discounted self-parking at $20 per day, with unlimited in/out privileges for registered guests. Standard vehicles will fit in the garage, but if you have an RV or oversize vehicle, you probably should check with the hotel beforehand. There are a few city operated parking garages near the hotel with rates of $15 to $25 per day, but with no in and out privileges.
For our daily tours, we will have one of the buses equipped to handle wheelchairs. We have also contacted a company that will deliver rental wheelchairs or other mobility equipment to the hotel. Please check the box ( ) on the sign-up sheet if this is of interest to you.
The hotel is 10 miles South of San Antonio International (SAT) Airport. The most common and cost-effective transportation from the airport is Uber/Lyft which can cost $15 each way for up to 4 persons. Supershuttle, at 800-258-3826, is available at $14 per person, but makes multiple stops along the way. You can expect to pay $27 for a taxi cab.
The San Antonio AMTRAK Station is located at 350 Hoefgen Street, and is about 1.5 miles ESE from our hotel.
If you need transportation help, please give us a call.

2018 Jacksonville Reunion Wrap Up
Our Jacksonville, Florida Reunion held March 14-18, 2018 was attended by 80 people. There were 45 shipmates there, of which 6 were 1st timers The 1st time attendees were Bill and Carol Bedford, John and June Caldwell, Eddie and Carol Fannon, Tim and Chris Durkin, John Hutchinson, Jeff and Holly Beal (Pete Peterson’s Family) and our special guests – John and Cheryl Delgado from Australia.
We welcomed back Charles and Brenda Barnett, Ray Benson and his daughter, Roxanne, and Bill Nowling. They had not been to a reunion in a long time. We hope to see them more often.
It has been a tradition at the banquet to give a lucky shipmate a reproduction of the Lone Sailor statue in the courtyard of United States Navy Memorial at Washington DC. This year the Lone Sailor statue went home with Don Bird.
We also award traveling door prizes which the winner may keep for one year and then must return the next year. The American flag flown over the ship in Vietnam will spend a year with Ray Benson. The valve wheel artifact salvaged when the ship was decommissioned in Taiwan went to Rick Hokans. The brass shell casing, a new traveling prize first awarded at Jacksonville, will be staying with Johnny Varisco for the year.
So please make plans to come to San Antonio and have a great time, and maybe have a chance to get one of these door prizes.
And be sure to check us out on Facebook at USS Lloyd Thomas Reunion Family.
