As you may know, our 2016 reunion scheduled for Charleston SC was cancelled due to Hurricane Matthew and rescheduled for the spring of 2017.
The rescheduled 2017 Reunion in Charleston turned out very well. We were sad that our hosts, Chief Ed and Diane Edwards could not share the great events they had planned for us due to health issues, but we were thinking of them none the less. There were 60 attendees, including 33 shipmates, of which 4 were reunion first timers.
We had a great time touring the museum ships at Patriots Point, and met there with new reunion shipmate Stan Taylor and his sister Lucy. We enjoyed a dinner cruise on the Cooper River, toured downtown Charleston, and after our memorial service at the Chapel of the Citadel, we watched the Friday parade of the Citadel students. The last day, we bused out to the Charleston Tea Plantation, and learned about how tea is grown at the only tea plantation in the United States.
Our banquet at the Doubletree was excellent. We had our usual raffle and door prize drawing. The Lone Sailor statue was won by John Marvin, and Jack Malady will be caretaker of the Vietnam Battle Flag for the year. Mike Creighton will be taking care of the Lloyd Thomas artifact until the Jacksonville reunion.
Rick Hokans assembled a picture book of the Charleston reunion, and we have several copies available. If you would like a copy, just call or email us. You can preview the book and choose either the daytime cover version or the nighttime cover version. We also have the new USS Lloyd Thomas Challenge Coins as well as USS Lloyd Thomas hats, mugs, shirts and jackets. Check them out here.
